Who was rita kernn-larsen ?
This blog is dedicated to the work of my mother, the almost forgotten world famous surrealist painter and the time, lives and stories of women surrealist artists.
When my mother passed away in 1998, at the age of 94, she had literally been all the way around most of the ism’s. From naturalism and cubism to surrealism on to portraits and landscapes, turning to abstract until she finally re-visited the surreal world with her many collages.
In Rita’s own words: “The surrealist period was definitely the best time of my life.”
It is her-story, with articles, reviews and pictures, that I wish to shed light on, as well as those of other women artists, who have, all too often, disappeared into the mist of history.
The 1939s was a turbulent decade with the depression, huge unemployment and the relentless rise of naziism. Yet, in the midst of this ‘ grand disorder’ an artistic revolution stirred. The European art world flourished and ‘ gave birth’ to a bunch of wildly talented, wonderful , crazy artists such Max Ernst, Magritte, Picasso, Leonora Carrington, Frida Kahlo and many more.
We are delighted to be able to present, for the first time, limited edition prints of watercolours by the surrealist painter Rita Kernn Larsen.
